I want to share with you a custom/alternative, yet casual format how we're playing YGO with some of my friends. There are ideas that may not work in competitive environment and/or that needs cooperation with people you know, so I suggested alternative methods for these. Hope you may find ideas that you can adapt to your own alternative duels.
I'm also planning to write more about this format: deck types, analysises, even featured matches. So if you're interested in, don't hesitate and I'll write about it as much as I can.
First, let's see the basics of the format before I tell you what small details are different:
- It uses each cards released. It doesn't matter if it is OCG or TCG exclusive, you are free to use it.
- The banlist rotates in every 3 months decided by COMMUNITY. It means that we talk with the dudes what should be banned, limited, semi-limited or unlimited. The whole format is community-based.
- The banlist is based on the mixture of OCG and TCG banlists, but has modifications. The list always uses the lowest limitation of a card (for example, if a card is limited at TCG but unlimited in OCG, it is limited here. If it is banned in OCG, but semi-limited in TCG, it is banned here). There are exceptions that will be mentioned later.
- There are "unique" cards. It means that only one person can have the aforementioned cards. Imagine it as if only one copy existed of the card. I will talk about it later.
- Last, but not least, it is a "story-based" league format. Which means that all of us choose a deck that cannot be used by other players. (For example, my chosen archetype is Gusto, and no one else in our local used it.) Before we started to build decks, we all chose the decks we wanted to, so no other players would use it. If it was a bad or good deck, we mentioned it to the player who chose that, but we also mentioned that we will modify it. You have to make some modifications if you want to play it online and/or with strangers at your local.
- Once in a week or two, we can have feature matches. Which means that we are playing for "ante", but not for real card, but for the right to obtain a specific card. (For example, if I want to use Red Dragon Archfiend, but it is obtained by other player, I can challenge him for a featured match, as it is "feature match time". I offer Stardust Dragon's right to use if I lose, and he accepts. If I lose, I give him/her Stardust Dragon. If I win, I get RDA).
Now let's see the details!
- EACH Extra Deck card is "unique". It means that only one exists in the metagame. (If I use "Stardust Dragon", no one can use it). You can make it more competitive-friendly by simply limiting them in your local.
- Qliphort Scout is banned.
- Dragon Ruler babies are unlimited, but the "Dragon-Type" part is erased. (so they only work with their own Attribute)
- Dragon Rulers are "unique" and they only work with their own Attribute (Dragon-Type parts are changed to their own Attribute).
- Trishula is not banned, but requires "Ice-Barrier" non-Tuner monsters
- Dante (Burning Abyss) is banned
- Mermail Abysslinde is still limited
- Necloth Trishula is banned, Unicore is at 1
- The "One Gods" (Korean-Exclusive "Lovecraftian" gods) like Elder God Noden are banned
- Skill Drain is at 1
- Rescue Rabbit is at 2
- Djinn Releaser of Rituals is banned
- Vanity's Emptiness is at 1
